The Wright Brothers
Picture 'wright2/jp'
In 1903 at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina Orville and Wilbur Wright designed the first powered Aircraft. But it was not powered by fuel like planes are today. It was powered by a lawn mower engine. They tossed a coin to see who got to fly the plane and Orville Wright won. He became the first person to fly a plane.

But the flight only lasted 12 seconds. Over the next two years they made better planes. The better planes went nearly forty kilometres in thirty eight minutes.
The secret of the wright brothers success lay in the design of the wings. Before building their first plane they studied aerodynamics. Aerodynamics is how air flows. The information that the wright brothers got helped them a lot to make the wings on their plane. The first time that Wilbur and Orville referred to themselves as "The Wright Brother" was when they started their own printing firm at the ages of 22 and 18. Using a damaged tombstone and buggy parts, they built a press and printed odd jobs as well as their own newspaper.
