Joseph Bramah in 1778 invented the toilet, it had a valve at the bottom of the bowl that worked on a hinge. The hinge was used before the invention of the ballcock. Joseph Bramah was born in 1774 in a small village near Barnsley. His father was a small farmer and Joseph the eldest of five children was destined for farming. As a boy with some spare time he made some instruments and made some creditable pieces of work with very imperfect tools. When he was 16 he had an accident to his right ankle which made it impossible for him to work on the farm.
He wanted to create another invention so he decided to make a lock and he did. It was very successful. It took from 1784 until 1851 until someone broke the lock A.C Hobbs broke it. Joseph Bramah never invented anything again.
